Teaching Philosophy: Music is a language that is unique and very personal to every individual. I seek to understand how every student learns in order to mold lessons and activities to fit their particular needs. Together, we build a foundation to develop their own voice in the expression of music through learning how the student themselves learns best. Whether it be improvisation, composition, or the learning of a concrete repertoire, I seek to enable the student to master the process. Through these experiences, the student develops not only confidence in themselves, but also in the realization that they too are able to teach and develop their own personal voice in music and other skills throughout their life.
Carla Lemburger
I attended the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, earning a bachelor’s degree in Music with a minor in Education. To expand and grow more in the field of music I later attended the University of Iowa, studying Music Therapy and becoming certified as a Music Therapist. Through these studies, I have been able to learn about voice (singing), piano, and guitar. These opportunities allowed for learning about a broad array of individuals, and their unique learning styles.
The enthusiasm children have for learning, and the joy when connections are made, is what is rewarding about teaching. Each student has their individual learning style and abilities, as well as their attitude toward the learning process. While it may take a little extra time and practice to understand and learn an instrument or skill, with continued dedication it will come more readily to support future progress as musical knowledge and technique are learned. It is a learning process for all involved to see what works to make the lesson enjoyable and continue to learn and progress in their knowledge.
Time and patience are important as a teacher, as well as a music therapist. Included in this is the ability to adapt. This may mean taking an extra additional step to review a skill to ensure comprehension before moving on and attempting further, or adjusting the direction of the lesson based on the student’s needs. Music therapy can address a diverse array of goals, which makes it a unique mode to address such needs as educational, societal, cognitive, or relaxation. Through structure and repetition during lessons, students have the opportunity to practice such skills to aid their progress in these goal areas over time.
